Service Description

Ever wanted to draw realistic wildlife? This 4-week course will guide you through the fundamentals of compressed charcoal and pastel drawing, teaching you to create realistic wildlife portraits. Learn to identify key shapes, render fur detail, and bring your subjects to life with expressive eyes. In a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, you'll discover blending techniques and hone your observation skills to take you from beginner to confident artist, leaving with a piece you'll be proud to frame. This 4 week course will teach you the basics you need to get going. I will show you how to use your powers of observation to create attractive artworks you will want to hang in your home. Throughout the eight hours of instruction (four two-hour classes), you'll develop essential skills for capturing the beauty and character of wildlife, progressing from basic shapes to creating lifelike charcoal masterpieces. This creative activity is designed for beginners, so there's absolutely no need to worry about your current drawing abilities. Many people believe they "can't draw," but with the right guidance and techniques, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve when working with charcoal. During the workshop, you'll work systematically through a range of techniques using compressed charcoal. First, you'll learn to identify and sketch the foundational shapes of animals, then develop shading skills to create depth and dimension. You'll master the art of drawing realistic, wet-look eyes that bring your animals to life, followed by techniques for rendering fur that appears soft and touchable. The course also includes experimentation with pastels to introduce subtle colour to your work. In the final lesson, you'll combine all these skills to complete a finished wildlife portrait. All materials will be provided. This course runs for 4 weeks, beginning on July 1st (Tuesday) 7pm - 9pm at Herrings Green Farm. The dates for the course will be: July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22nd.
